If youre looking to find a game to play with family and friends locally then check out some of these game picks down below. These are not ranked in any particular order as were trying to represent several different genres. Hopefully youll find something of interest to play with a friend locally.

#48 Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

The LEGO Star Wars franchise is secretly one of the better co-op franchises out there. Because with its LARGE roster of characters you can have fun with, you and your friends can have a unique adventure in a galaxy far, far away while not being made to feel as though your co-op gameplay doesnt matter.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is one that youll definitely want to play with friends because you have a long journey ahead of you in it. With nine movies to play in that are LEGO Style youll have plenty of characters to be, abilities to use, and yes, collectibles to find.

#47 Samurai Warriors 5

Samurai Warriors first got started up back in 2004. Its a hack and slash game, somewhat similar to the Dynasty Warriors franchise. However, in 2021, the game series had a reboot installment with Samurai Warriors 5. Developers essentially wanted a fresh start with the game. We had new designs and an all-new storyline. With this game, we went through the events leading up to the Honno-ji incident, which saw the betrayal of Oda Nobunaga, one of the great feudal lords.

Fortunately, you can go through the game with a friend, but there is a process. To unlock co-op, youll need to progress through the first chapter, eventually opening up multiplayer. With multiplayer, two players can go through the remaining missions together as they fight off countless enemies on the battlefield. Again, you can often describe this game to the likes of Dynasty Warriors. Youll have to hack and slash your way through armies of enemies, flinging them up in the air and unleashing a flurry of combo hits.

#46 Star Wars Battlefront 2

The Star Wars Battlefront series has been around for a while but it was during last-generation video game console platforms that the series got picked back up in a slight reboot. Currently, the latest installment for this series is Star Wars Battlefront 2 and its what you would expect from these types of games. Outside of the campaign, there are plenty of battles to partake in as you typically play a ground soldier attempting to fight off the opposing side.

Did you know that you could play split-screen with this game as well? Unfortunately, its limited to offline so that may be a bit of a bummer for those wanting more of an action-packed competitive gameplay experience, but those that are still wanting to dive into two-player gameplay can do so within the Arcade mode. Here you can take part in different iconic scenarios from the Star Wars films or simply create your customized battle to your liking.

#45 Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil is an iconic survival horror franchise and over the years starting it was mainly a single-player experience. However, the later games started to open up co-op as an option in which case we would recommend checking out Resident Evil 5. Now, this game had a bad wrap when it initially launched into the marketplace but over the years things have started to change. Its looked more fondly as a multiplayer action-horror game.

Here players are taking the role of either Chris Redfield or a newcomer protagonist to the series, Sheva Alomar. Set in Africa, the duo begins an investigation over a new virus mutation. As you can expect, there are plenty of enemies to face off against along with a slew of puzzles. It might not be as tough as some of the earlier survival-horror installments to the franchise, but you should have plenty of fun as a third-person shooter.

#44 Towerfall Ascension

Towerfall Ascension is a competitive game you can play locally. In this game, players are starting in a corner of a map with one arrow that they can fire at their enemy. When the game starts, the players are attempting to hit each other with their arrows or avoiding a hit by jumping around the different platforms. Meanwhile, players can pick up arrows to use as ammunition or gather up a powerup found within the map. Similar to a battle royale type of game, when players take too much time the map shrinks in size. This ultimately forces players to get closer together for an attack. Its a simple game, yet an incredibly addicting party title to enjoy with some friends locally.

#43 Crash Team Racing

Nintendo may have dominated the kart racing genre with Mario Kart over the years but that doesnt mean there are no alternatives. One of the earlier alternatives to have come out with Crash Team Racing on the original PlayStation, however, years later we received a remastered edition of this game. Its exactly like what you would expect from a kart racer. Here we have a collection of characters and map designs that are featured from the Crash Bandicoot IP. While racing throughout the course, there are plenty of different buffs you can grab along the way. These will either give players a bit of a speed boost or offers a weapon to use against other racers in the course.

#42 Mortal Kombat 11

We dont need to go into detail about the Mortal Kombat IP. This is a classic fighting franchise that got started in arcades but continues to find new thrilling installments for modern platforms today. One of the latest installments is Mortal Kombat 11, which is a game that plays on history. As a result, youre getting a brutal fighting title with these iconic characters. Whether you enjoy button mashing or more technical move combinations, Mortal Kombat 11 caters to a wide audience of players.

#41 Injustice Series

From the development team NetherRealm Studios, we have the Injustice series. These are the folks behind the Mortal Kombat games as of the last several years, but in this game series, were dealing with DC Comics characters. Its not as violent and bloody as Mortal Kombat, but the gameplay, in general, is very much the same. Theres a nice flow to the fighting while players are picking one of several different iconic DC Comics heroes or villains to fight with. Not only will the characters have different level designs to feature the comic setting each character is from but also certain characters will have some unique interactions with each other. Players will find that there are two video game installments readily available today with fans expecting a third installment will be unveiled in the future.

#40 Spelunky 2

Spelunky was a hit indie platformer and it wasnt much of a surprise to see a sequel come out into the marketplace to further enhance the gameplay experience. In Spelunky 2 players are once again going through a 2D platform as you explore deadly caves that take players into the dark depths of below. This is a procedurally generated video game so not only will the level change up to provide new challenges or pathways that players can take along with plenty of hostile enemies that will pop up to deal with. Players can work together in a local co-op as you attempt to scavenge treasure, watch out for traps, and defeat monsters.

#39 Brawlhalla

Currently, Nintendo offers the biggest seller when it comes to platform fighters. The Super Smash Bros franchise is highly beloved with players taking control of an iconic video game character as they head into battle. Several different level designs force players to jump around to avoid opponents while making use of the level design to deliver powerful blows. Meanwhile, several unique items will drop down onto the map which offers some kind of a buff whether its to reduce the damage youve taken already or a weapon that can be used against your opponents.

Fortunately, theres a free alternative that you can pick up on the PlayStation 4 which is Brawlhalla. Its a game that mimics the Super Smash Bros formula but with a different roster of characters. While there are some unique characters for this game, players will find that there are also crossovers that have happened to bring in more iconic characters for players to use. In the past, weve seen franchises such as Rayman, WWE, Adventure Time, The Walking Dead, to Tomb Raider showcased in Brawlhalla.

#38 Trackmania Turbo

The Trackmania games have been incredibly fun. These are over-the-top action-packed racing arcade games. Players essentially are racing through intense speeds going around different courses that are out of this world. They could have big jumps or spirals. One of the popular installments thats worth checking out is Trackmania Turbo which offers split-screen support. Players can join together and attempt to race against each other with up to four-player support. You could even create your tracks to race around in the level editor so theres always a new track available to race around in.

#37 Castle Crashers Remastered

Castle Crashers is a pretty iconic beat em up a title that was released as an XBLA game for the Xbox 360 platform. However, there is Castle Crashers Remastered edition available for players that either want to replay this game on the PlayStation 4 or enjoy it for the first time. Within the game, players are taking the role of knights as they seek out to rescue the kingdoms princess after she was kidnapped by an evil wizard. Throughout the game, players are battling against all sorts of behemoth monsters. Its a solid title that up to four players locally can join in together.

#36 Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is another indie title thats featured in this list. Players are working together to operate a spaceship. In this ship, there are four different stations in which players will need to run around the ship to reach a specific station. For instance, if you needed to work the engines, then you would run to the bay that correlates to the engines but the same can be said for shields and weapons. There are more bays than there are players so its a constant battle to work with your team of players as you attempt to battle against hostile enemies.

#35 It Takes Two

From the same developer behind A Way Out, Hazelight Studios comes It Takes Two. The game is just like A Way Out in the sense that you need two players to go through the game. While the game narrative is about rekindling the relationship between two characters that have seemingly fallen out of love, the gameplay is where this game shines. Its full of creativity and it constantly changes up the gameplay so its never feeling dull. No matter if its platforming, makeshift fighting games, or solving puzzles, the entire game is always centered around both players working together to complete an objective.

#34 Sportsfriends

Sportsfriends is a bit of a wacky title to play thats made for at the very least two players. Its a collection of minigames which are great for when you have some friends together. For instance, players can go through a game where youre pole vaulting in the air to hit a ball attached to the line. The goal here is to hit the ball into the opposing sides goal. However, because of the odd physics, its tough just reaching the ball and hitting it correctly. You even have a game where players are using motion controllers to keep a steady hand as they listen to classical music. With each player representing an instrument within the band, the focus is attempting to wack the players hands while holding the controller in hopes the movement is too fast resulting in their instrument breaking in-game.

#33 Nidhogg

Those of you wanting a more simple game to play will want to dive into Nidhogg. Its a 2D game fighting game where the goal is to reach the end of the level, depending on which way your character faces when the game starts. When you reach the end of the level, youre sacrificed to a giant monster. However, along the way youre constantly battling your opponent. Players are dueling each other with swords so its a constant battle to parry and sink the sword into your opponents body. When you successfully kill the opponent, you move onto the next screen where the player will have respawned and ready to fight again. This process repeats until one player manages to reach the final screen where the monster awaits. If you enjoy the game, then theres a sequel worth trying out as well.

#32 Speedrunners

Speedrunners is a competitive racing game where players are taking the role of characters that have grappling hooks. Its all about staying ahead of the pack by using your grappling hook to swing forward and jumping over obstacles. Since the camera focuses on whoever is in the lead, the characters that end up getting out of frame are killed off. However, its very easy to catch up and gain the lead since the person in front has far less view of whats coming up ahead. This means those that are in the back have a heads up on just what obstacles theyll need to avoid going forward.

#31 Hellpoint

If you enjoy Souls-like video games and want something of a local co-op split screen experience then give Hellpoint a chance. This is a game that doesnt throw a bunch of story lore for you but instead lets you come up with whats going on your own as you progress through the game. Its a brutal tense battle as you go through this science-fiction game, you have a ton of hellish monsters to battle with. When you die off the game throws in a version of yourself to battle with so the better the gear you had will result in the tougher the fight.

#30 Street Fighter V

Another fighting game worth pointing out that you could pick up and enjoy is Street Fighter V. The Street Fighter franchise, in general, has been around for ages and its brought plenty of memorable characters to battle with. Were waiting on the Street Fighter 6 announcement, but for now, Street Fighter V is the latest release for the mainline franchise that you can pick up and enjoy today.

In this game, we have the V Trigger system in place which changes up some of the gameplay. Each character has some kind of an ability to use when the meter is filled. It could be a more powerful attack or a buff that gives a character more opportunity to rank up a combo set. If you remember enjoying the Street Fighter franchise over the past decades then this is a game worth picking up especially for the PlayStation 4 platform as it never made its way to other consoles since it was released.

#29 Rock Band 4

Rock Band is quite the iconic video game that doesnt get brought up much these days. It was a rhythm-based video game where players played with makeshift instruments in a band. This included a microphone, guitar, bass, and the drums. You can still enjoy this game on the PlayStation 4 with Rock Band 4, which was the latest mainline release from developers Harmonix. Its a bit older now with the game releasing back in 2015, but overall the gameplay itself remained the same. You had a wide selection of tracks to play with and its overall just a solid fun game to play with friends. We might not ever see the huge hype over rhythm games like we did back in the mid-2000s but youre bound to have some fun if you play this game next time you have a party gathering.

#28 Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is a party game that is played with the PSVR although you can get away with it now without a VR headset. With that said, its a bit more fun with the VR component. In the game, the player with the VR headset is locked in a room with a timebomb. Located all around the bomb are puzzles with knobs, switches, lights, symbols, and wires. Its your job to tell the people outside of VR what youre seeing so that they can view the manual. With a limited amount of time, the players with the manual are not able to see the bomb and must rely on the VR player to explain what they are seeing. By looking at the manual you can tell the player in VR how to disarm the bomb. If you take too long or guess wrong the bomb will detonate.

#27 Puyo Puyo Tetris 2

The Puyo games never really made their way to the western markets all that much compared to the original titles that were released in Japan. However, in 2014 we did receive Puyo Puyo Tetris. If youre unfamiliar with these games, they match four types of titles where you require gathering four of these colored orbs as they dropped down into the board, very much like Tetris. Meanwhile, Tetris acted very much the same as it has over the past several decades. In Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 we get a new installment that provides more of the crossover type of puzzle competitive game challenge. Players can face each other and attempt to fill their board with blocks in order to win the game.

#26 Moving Out

If you enjoy party games like Overcooked then Moving Out is one title you wont want to miss. Its a game that released in 2020 so its relatively new and best of all, the game can offer up to four-player support. Similar to Overcooked, the game is all about strategy and working against the clock. Instead of dealing with a kitchen and cooking up particular dishes, Moving Out forces players into a moving company. Your job as a unit is to clear out a house from all the boxes, fragile items, and appliances.

It sounds simple enough but youre on a time crunch to hit certain awards by clearing the house within a designated time slot. Furthermore, the challenge presents itself by the uniquely shaped furniture that makes it difficult to carry out alone but also incredibly challenging to work alongside a friend. Finding the best ways to take unique shaped furniture is all about working with a friend and plotting away. You can even play a bit risky by throwing items to other players to bypass certain hazards.

#25 Streets of Rage 4

If you owned a Sega Genesis back in the day, you had the Streets of Rage series, or at the very least Streets of Rage 2. The video game franchise is a classic beat em up series that had only three installments available though the gameplay remained the same. In this game, players take on a character that is forced into fighting off all sorts of thugs and criminals as they restore society. While the franchise was quite popular, it would be decades before a new installment released. Now we have Streets of Rage 4 available to enjoy which takes place ten years after the events of Streets of Rage 3.

With a few familiar faces along with some newcomers, players will have to fight off a new crime syndicate that had been brainwashing the city. While the visuals had been tweaked a bit, the gameplay remains very much the same and if youre familiar with the past installments, you know that this is an excellent cooperative gameplay experience. In Streets of Rage 4, the game can support up to four players offline.

#24 Borderlands 3

The Borderlands franchise has been one that several gamers easily flocked to when wanting to enjoy a cooperative gameplay experience. Fortunately, Borderlands 3 is everything weve come to love from the franchise with several big enhancements to keep players awe inspired. If you havent played a Borderlands game, then this is a looter shooter. Its all about taking down enemies while grabbing new gear and there is a vastly wide range of gear to pick up. Unlike before, players will not be stuck just on Pandora but will be going through a variety of unique looking planets full of colorful scenery and wacky characters as you seek out Vaults.

Were not going to spoil the narrative for you, but whats most important in this list is the cooperative gameplay. Just as before you will still find the Borderlands franchise will support local co-op and split-screen gameplay. If youre playing the game on the PlayStation 4 youll have the ability to jump into the game with a couple of friends.

#23 Knights and Bikes

Knights and Bikes is a quirky game that takes inspiration from adventure tales such as the cinematic hit, The Goonies. In the game, players take the role of two young girls that strive to explore the island and unearth the secrets it holds. Most of the game is based around puzzle-solving and with the girls having unique abilities, youll have to use a combination of their unique attributes in order to complete the tasks that lay ahead. Speaking of abilities, the game also makes use of their different attacks when facing off against an assortment of enemies, with a certain character proving to be more useful in select situations.

#22 Team Sonic Racing

As mentioned the kart racers have mainly been dominated by Mario Kart but if theres another competitor that can provide the same thrills and fun then it has to go to Segas All-Stars Racing series. There have been a few titles in the mix that focuses on Sega properties and characters, but this latest installment features just the Sonic IP. In 2019 we got Team Sonic Racing which only features characters and locations found within the various Sonic the Hedgehog titles so you may be out of luck if you were hoping other Sega IPs would make an appearance in this installment. Players will find that the characters featured are broken down into classes that will either emphasize on areas such as speed or power. Likewise, there are over twenty different tracks which again are designed by the different levels found in the main Sonic titles.

An area that you may find of interest with this game is that the developers included a cooperative gameplay mode which puts players into teams. From there they will race alongside each other as they attempt to win races that factor in how well the team actually works together. Instead of having players simply cross the finish line in first, players will have to work together throughout the race such as providing each other power-ups when needed.

#21 Tiny Tinas Wonderlands

Tiny Tinas Wonderlands is a spin-off of the incredibly popular Borderlands franchise. Well be going through this game following the iconic and chaotic Borderlands 2 character, Tiny Tina. However, its worth noting that you dont have to play any of the Borderlands games to enjoy this title. Instead, players are getting a standalone experience here where the focus is around a fantasy world where spells and melee weapons take the lead. With that said, players can expect the same loot system where youll come across a plethora of unique gear pieces. Youll also find that this game will thrive when played with friends. You and your group of buddies cango through this new whimsical adventure, fighting off monsters and seeking to end the tyrannical Dragon Lord today. For the PlayStation 4, you can have up to two players in local cooperative gameplay.

#20 Gang Beasts

If youre not after a narrative experience and want a little more wacky gameplay then we suggest looking at Gang Beasts. This is a party style brawler beat em up title where players take on the role of a humanoid blob. Your goal is to be the last man standing as you kick, punch and attempt to toss your opponents into hazardous areas scattered throughout the map. Gameplay is addicting and its a great time with lighthearted gameplay.

#19 Unravel Two

In Unravel Two players will step into the role of a yarn figurine as you attempt to maneuver around the world and solve puzzles. However, due to being made of yarn and having a restriction on where along with how far you can go will make the game a bit challenging. If you enjoyed the first title then you may want to pick up the sequel as it also supports multiplayer which is the main caveat of the sequel. Players must work together and solve puzzles and overcome obstacles.

#18 Broforce

Broforce is an explosive four-player co-op platformer follows a group of badasses inspired by action movie heroes such as Bro Hard, Rambro, and Indiana Brones. Players will be clearing out all freedom-hating terrorists as they liberate the innocent civilians. This is one title well worth playing with a group of friends as its simple, addicting and with the map creator, new levels are constantly being added to download.

#17 Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris

The sequel to Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris offers a new action-adventure for a group of friends to go through. This title plays out similar to its predecessor which is a non-linear arcade style action-adventure where Lara Croft, Carter, Isis, and Horus who are set off to defeat an evil deity known as Set. Played in an isometric camera view, up to four players can join in to go through the narrative campaign which involves combat and puzzle solving.

#16 Capcom Beat Em Up Bundle

Capcom recently put out a new bundle compilation release known as Capcom Beat Em Up Bundle, a collection of seven video game arcade classics. Included in the compilation are Captain Commando, The King of Dragonss, Knights of the Round, Warriors of Fate, Armored Warriors, Battle Circuit, and Final Fight.

#15 A Way Out

A Way Out is an action-adventure journey from Hazelight Studios. This is the second video game to be directed by Josef Fares who you may be familiar with from his previous title, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.

Overall, this is a rather unique action-adventure video game as it will require two players at all times. Players will be taking the role of inmates who must escape their imprisonment. Most would say that the game is a carbon copy at times with the film, Shawshank Redemption. Regardless, the entire game is played out in a split-screen where youll work with a friend in an attempt to maneuver around the levels, solve puzzles and progress the story.

#14 Call of Duty Zombies

A number of Call of Duty installments offer a fantastic co-op multiplayer game mode which is often referred to as zombies. These game modes are always a fun to play through mindlessly or simply to see just how far you and some friends can make it through the waves of zombies.

#13 Sonic Mania

Sonic the Hedgehog is a staple video game character. Decades have passed and to this day, there are still new Sonic games being pumped out. Sonic Mania is a side-scrolling platformer that fans of the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game will be familiar with. This latest installment at times reboots past levels of the iconic franchise and greatly extends them. Most of the iconic power-ups are available along with a few new ones added into the mix. There is also a wide assortment of boss fights.

Overall, this is one of the best installments from the entire franchise and just like the franchise, there is multiplayer here. Likewise, there is competition modes where players can race each other to see who reaches the end of the level first.

The game offers a day and night cycle in which the day portion puts players into collecting resources such as food and firewood while at night the game tosses monsters for players to avoid. The third installment to the series brings in three additional characters which offers their own unique abilities and that will come to play in solving certain puzzles through the campaign. Luckily, if you complete the game, the development team has allowed user created levels to be uploaded to go through. Combat is chaotic as friendly fire does play a factor which will mean players will have to carefully plan out their every move and combat strategy.

#8 Enter The Gungeon

Enter the Gungeon can be a punishing adventure to take on. Players will be going through a series of procedural-generated levels as they hunt down loot and face against an array of enemies. Best of all, the game offers a co-op mode to help aid in the journey into the gungeon.

#7 Ultimate Chicken Horse

Those looking to get some competitive gameplay in then you cant go wrong with Ultimate Chick Horse. Its a fun little party platformer where players take the role of animal and race through a series of difficult levels in hopes of racking up points. Each level is filled with obstacles and hazards which makes it tough to maneuver through in a race to reach the finish line first. This is also a very quick game with rounds only lasting a minute which means that not only are you racing to reach the end first but youll also have to deal with a timer. Its a simple party game that youll likely have a blast playing with family and friends.

#6 Diablo III

The third installment of the Diablo series by developers Blizzard Entertainment made its way to PC, but also consoles. Playing out much like its predecessors, gamers pick one of six possible character classes and begin their journey of taking on quests and grabbing up precious loot. Of course, the game works best when you gather a group of friends to go through this action RPG hack-and-slash title.

#5 Shovel Knight

Shovel Knight is a side-scrolling 2D hit that looks as if it belongs as a classic hit for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Its clear that the developers created this game after the love and joy from those early 2D side-scrolling platformers along with beat em up video game titles. Even if you didnt enjoy the early years of Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System or Sega Genesis, this is still very much a must-play video game. Were thrilled for the upcoming expansion Shovel Knight: King of Cards, but we cant help but wonder if the development team will be giving this game an official sequel in the near future.

#4 Divinity: Original Sin 2

Divinity: Original Sin 2 takes place after the first installment. During a time of wars and religious persecution, Bishop Alexandar the Innocent declares all Sorcerers to be criminals. Now a group of four Sorcerers embarks on a journey to defeat the Bishop. Players can join together in a party as well making the journey cooperative.

The game did originally release on the PC platform back in 2017 where it was a massive hit from both critics and fans alike. Its worth noting that this is a turn-based combat RPG which may be a turnoff for some gamers. However, if you enjoy the game then the development team has included support for mods which will allow players to create new content for others to enjoy. Those of you after a thrilling co-op RPG where players can join in and control a member of a party shouldnt pass this title up.
